Lufthansa and Fraport formally opened their “Gate of the Future” at Frankfurt Airport on October 27, 2026, using Gate A16 in Terminal 1 to test a different boarding and waiting-area experience.

The project combines mobile staff assistance, larger information screens and new seating and working spaces. It is a trial at one gate, rather than a confirmed airport-wide rollout.

Staff assistance moves into the waiting area

According to Lufthansa’s official announcement, staff carrying tablets will approach passengers around the gate to assist with matters such as rebooking, seats and upgrades. The tablets bring multiple boarding systems into one interface.

Wall monitors and 360-degree displays show departure and boarding information, hand-luggage guidance and gate changes. QR codes provide access to digital self-service tools, including the Lufthansa app.

New furniture, with a limited test scope

The redesigned space includes sofas, artworks and work cubes intended to provide more privacy for passengers who need to work. The lounge-style appearance describes the furniture; the announcement does not describe A16 as a separate airline lounge.

Lufthansa and Fraport say customer experience at A16 will help them decide which features could be used elsewhere. Their announcement gives no timetable for expanding the concept to other gates.

What passengers should check

Travellers should continue to follow the gate and boarding instructions for their own flight. The A16 trial does not mean other Frankfurt gates offer the same facilities, or that every Lufthansa passenger will use the redesigned area.

The formal inauguration follows earlier public reporting about the trial. It should not be confused with the first announcement of the project. Find related reporting in Flyzeu’s Germany aviation news section.
