South Yorkshire leaders approved plans on October 27, 2026 to buy Doncaster Sheffield Airport and the adjacent Innovation Quarter employment land. The decision allows the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to proceed, but the transaction remains subject to contract and agreement with Peel Land.

What the airport purchase decision means

The authority’s October 27 statement describes a step towards bringing the site into public ownership. It does not announce a completed transfer or the return of passenger flights.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said Peel still needed to approve the deal formally and that legal work remained. Peel Land managing director Stephen Wild said the company would continue working with the authority to finalise the transaction. Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones supported buying the freehold as part of the reopening effort.

Purchase approval and airport reopening are different milestones

The airport closed in November 2022, according to the authority. Its update describes work on airspace proposals, staffing and equipment procurement, including fire vehicles and radar. Those preparations should not be read as confirmation that the airport is ready to accept a particular passenger service.

The statement gives no confirmed reopening date, bookable airline timetable or purchase price. Treat forecasts about jobs and investment as the authority’s expectations, rather than completed outcomes.

What travellers should check next

  • Look for confirmation that the transaction has completed, followed by separate operational and airline announcements.
  • Check the airport and travel dates on any ticket being offered. A purchase announcement does not establish a scheduled flight.
  • Wait for a dated airline itinerary before arranging a separate connection or non-refundable accommodation around a proposed departure.

The authority says Doncaster Council’s Cabinet will discuss transitional arrangements on October 28. That is a next step listed in its October 27 statement; this report does not claim that the Cabinet has reached a decision.
