Phu Quoc International Airport in Vietnam put its second runway into commercial operation on October 29, with the first aircraft landing at 7:04 a.m. local time, according to Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM).
The air navigation service provider said Sun PhuQuoc Airways flight SPQ1955, operated with an Airbus A321neo, made the first landing on runway 10L/28R. The time corresponds to 00:04 UTC.
38 flights handled during the first morning
In its October 29 operational report, VATM recorded 38 flights arriving at or departing from Phu Quoc during the morning: 25 arrivals and 13 departures. It said the aircraft handled included Airbus A330 and Boeing 787 widebodies.
The new runway measures 3,300 metres long and 45 metres wide. VATM said it was brought into service after eight months of construction and meets ICAO Code E standards, allowing it to accommodate a range of widebody aircraft.
Operational preparations and airport capacity
VATM said preparations included controller training on the new runway, taxiway and apron layouts, reviews of operating procedures and technical readiness, and coordination of aeronautical information and notices.
The runway opening follows the start of Phu Quoc’s approach control sector on October 1. VATM described the combined changes as supporting air traffic capacity as the island develops tourism and prepares for the APEC 2027 summit.
The announcement confirms the runway’s entry into service. It does not establish that the airport’s wider terminal expansion has opened.
