JFK’s AirTrain is the link between airline terminals, airport facilities and New York transit. The key fare distinction is simple: rides around the airport are free, while a trip through the Jamaica or Howard Beach fare gates costs $8.75. This guide helps you choose a station, make the connection and avoid paying for the wrong journey.
Which AirTrain station should you use?
Jamaica is the AirTrain connection for the Long Island Rail Road and the E, J and Z subway lines. It is often the useful choice for a traveler heading toward Midtown Manhattan by rail, but the best route depends on your final address and current service. Check the airport’s public-transport guide and your live transit directions before buying a ticket.
Howard Beach connects with the A subway line. It can suit journeys along that line, including parts of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Do not assume it is interchangeable with Jamaica: the lines lead to different subway and rail connections.
Federal Circle is the airport stop for rental cars and designated hotel-shuttle connections. Lefferts Boulevard serves long-term parking and other airport-ground-transport connections. Follow the signs for your specific rental company, parking lot or hotel shuttle, because pickup arrangements can change.
What is free, and when do you pay?
According to JFK Airport’s AirTrain guide, travel between passenger terminals is free. The airport also describes on-airport journeys to places such as Federal Circle and Lefferts Boulevard as free. The standard one-way AirTrain fare is $8.75 when entering or exiting at Jamaica or Howard Beach; children under five ride free. Subway and LIRR fares are separate.
You can pay the AirTrain fare with a contactless credit or debit card, a compatible phone or wearable, or an OMNY card. The airport says OMNY cards can be purchased or refilled at vending machines in the Jamaica and Howard Beach subway stations. If you use a fare cap or group discount, read the current conditions on the official AirTrain fare page before relying on it.
How much time should you allow?
JFK says the terminal-to-terminal AirTrain ride takes under 10 minutes and trains normally run every 5–15 minutes. That is train time, not a door-to-gate promise: walking to the station, waiting, fare gates, luggage and airport security add time. Check station screens and the airport advisories on your travel day. During a planned overnight closure or other disruption, follow the airport’s replacement-transport instructions instead of normal AirTrain directions.
Accessibility and luggage
The airport says AirTrain trains and stations are accessible, with elevators or escalators at stations and wheelchair spaces on trains. Jamaica and Howard Beach provide accessible subway connections; Jamaica also connects with LIRR. Luggage and strollers are permitted. If you need step-free travel all the way to a particular destination, check each connecting subway or rail station as well as the AirTrain station.
A quick departure checklist
- Check your airline terminal and the airport’s current AirTrain advisory.
- Choose Jamaica for its LIRR/E/J/Z links or Howard Beach for the A line, based on your actual destination.
- Budget separately for the AirTrain fare and any subway or rail fare.
- Leave extra time for walking, waiting, luggage and possible service changes.
