Alaska seeks to join American’s Atlantic and Pacific joint businesses

1 Min Read

Alaska Airlines intends to join American Airlines’ Atlantic and Pacific Joint Businesses, a proposed expansion that the airlines say would broaden international travel options and West Coast connections. The change is not yet approved.

What Alaska would join

The Atlantic Joint Business includes American, British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus and LEVEL. The Pacific Joint Business includes American and Japan Airlines. Alaska’s proposed entry would build on its existing relationship with American and oneworld partners across both regions.

Regulatory steps remain

The airlines anticipate filing with the U.S. Department of Transportation for approval and antitrust immunity, while also seeking relevant approvals from international regulators. They described those steps as coming “in the coming months”; the announcement does not say that filings have been made or approvals granted.

The expected customer impact

Alaska says joining would give customers more seamless access to international destinations while preserving its care, loyalty benefits and premium experience. It also describes the proposal as part of its Alaska Accelerate strategy and says it would improve connectivity throughout the West Coast for joint-business customers. Those are stated aims, not confirmed results.
