Western Sydney Airport opened for passenger flights on October 25, 2026, with Jetstar’s first departure heading to the Gold Coast. Travelers now need to check which Sydney airport is on their booking, not just the city name.

Updated October 26, 2026: This guide has been revised from an opening preview following reporting of the first domestic flights on October 25 and the first international service on October 26. All flight times below are local to Sydney; this article is not a live departure board.

Western Sydney Airport opening: what happened?

Australian Aviation’s October 25 report says Jetstar flight JQ362 departed for the Gold Coast shortly after 11:20 a.m. Its return, JQ363, arrived at about 3:30 p.m. as the first inbound passenger flight. The reported aircraft was Airbus A320neo VH-A5E.

The passenger opening follows the October 25 date announced in Airservices Australia’s airport notice. Jetstar’s September trial-flight announcement had set out the planned first departure and domestic routes. A trial flight was operational preparation, not the start of commercial passenger service.

Which Jetstar routes serve WSI?

  • Melbourne: up to 14 flights a week.
  • Gold Coast: daily flights.
  • Brisbane: three flights a week.

Jetstar’s published opening schedule specifies Airbus A320 aircraft. The daily Gold Coast schedule updates the earlier plan for four weekly services. These are published route frequencies, not a guarantee of a particular departure or seat availability.

Have international flights started?

Yes. AFP’s October 26 report, carried by VnExpress, says an Air New Zealand aircraft arrived from Auckland and departed later that morning, marking WSI’s first international passenger service. This followed Jetstar’s domestic opening the previous day.

The airline’s July 17 route announcement set out three return services a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday using A320 and A321 aircraft. That announcement establishes the published route pattern, not the aircraft or exact operating time of every individual flight.

Check WSI versus SYD on the ticket and confirm the current departure time with Air New Zealand. The international launch does not mean every announced airline or destination has started operating.

WSI is not Sydney’s existing airport

Western Sydney International uses the airport code WSI. Sydney Kingsford Smith uses SYD. A booking described simply as “Sydney” is not enough to identify which airport you need.

Read the airport name and code on every flight segment. If an itinerary involves both airports, plan the ground transfer separately and confirm whether the ticket protects the connection. Do not assume an airport transfer is included because the flights appear on the same search results page.

Parking and assistance: arrange the details in advance

The airport’s passenger FAQs say parking can be booked in advance, with covered and uncovered options. Check the selected car park, vehicle restrictions and booking conditions rather than assuming all parking is beside the terminal or under cover.

Wheelchair support and other special assistance are arranged through the airline. Contact the carrier before travel; an airport’s accessible facilities are not a substitute for an assistance booking.

Before you leave for the airport

  1. Match the airport code, flight number and local departure date against your booking.
  2. Check the airline’s latest flight status and its check-in and baggage deadlines.
  3. Confirm your transport or parking arrangements for WSI specifically.
  4. Allow for unfamiliar roads and terminal procedures without relying on an unverified transfer-time estimate.

The opening does not mean every airline associated with WSI begins flying on the same day. Use your carrier’s actual operating dates, not an airport partner list, when planning a journey.
