NASA Opens Flight Director Applications Through Oct. 12

2 Min Read

NASA has opened applications for its next class of flight directors, who lead human-spaceflight missions from mission control at Johnson Space Center in Houston. U.S. citizens can apply through Monday, October 12.

Who can apply

Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. NASA also requires substantial related, progressively responsible professional experience, including time-critical decision-making in high-stress, high-risk environments.

Previous work as a flight controller in mission control is common among NASA flight directors, but it is not a prerequisite.

What flight directors do

Flight directors lead teams of flight controllers, astronauts, and commercial and international partners during real-time mission execution and risk management. Before missions, they work with engineering, safety, and program partners to align operational plans with spacecraft capabilities and mission objectives.

The role covers missions to the International Space Station and the Moon through Artemis, with human missions to Mars described as an eventual responsibility.

Selection and training

NASA plans to announce selections by the end of the year. Selected candidates will receive extensive training in flight control and spacecraft systems, operational leadership, and risk management.

Applications are available through USAJOBS, and NASA’s announcement links to further information about flight directors and the application process.
